Eikaiwa in Japan can be said to be a little different from regular English classes in that many students want to have fun learning spoken English with the focus on speaking time rather than writing, reading and grammar which they received enough of at school. This textbook is aimed at those teachers needing ready-to-go lessons for their private students.

Each lesson is two A4 pages. Photocopy for your students as an A3 sheet or scan and print out as one double sided A4 sheet. For the First Edition, email the address in the book to receive the MS Word file to easily personalize, localize and customize the lessons to add value for your students. For the Second Edition onward visit www.eikaiwatextbook.com. Each lesson is good for classes lasting 45-60 minutes.

Private English lessons are big business in Japan, but finding the right material for a man-to-man or small group class that is focused on conversation can be difficult. Many textbooks are reading, writing or grammar heavy. This textbook is focused on speaking right from the start. Perfect for fun and enjoyable conversation classes in classrooms, cafes or student homes.

Each lesson has the same, natural flowing lesson style: Warm Up, Grammar Point, Pattern Practice, Listening Activity, Model Conversation Text, Roleplay or Conversation Topic to apply the lesson target point.

Lessons are aimed at Japanese students, so there are many topics that are easily accessible for them. For example: explaining Japanese foods, customs, festivals and so on while the teacher can introduce their country.

Written by and for Eikaiwa teachers in Japan. Perfect for those people who teach private lessons in their spare time and need material ready to go for their lessons. Either have a spare copy for the student or photocopy a sheet for them.

Let’s Try 1 and Let’s Try 2 Units 1-9 English writing practice worksheets PDF for elementary school grade 3 and 4 textbook in Japan

With restrictions being placed on the activities that can be done in lessons at the moment, some teachers might have been told to use more time doing listening and writing practice. Here are some writing practice sheets I have created to use in my classes if I run out of material at the end of a lesson. There are writing practice sheets for Units 1-5 and 7-9, but Unit 6 were separate photocopied alphabet writing practice sheets supplied by my school. For grade 4, the later worksheets from Unit 5 have 2 sides, with an optional challenge for students to try if they finish the first page quickly.

Fonts for ESL Young Learners

The PDF file should display correctly even if you don’t have the fonts I used installed.

If you try to use the WORD file to edit on a PC without the fonts I used installed, it will not display correctly.

I used these fonts:

KG Primary Dots – a dotted print in four styles – plain letters, and three different lined versions

ABeeZee – a children’s learning font

You can see a great summary of educational fonts here. GO TO WWW.COLORMYLEARNING.COM

You can download two of the fonts suggested on that website here.

School Tablets and LoiloNote

Tablets have been introduced at my schools, so for each unit, I am planning to get students to  use the LoiloNote software to record themselves saying the target sentences into their iPads and then submit them to the teacher. I have done it a few times and it was very popular with the students.

If you are using LoiloNote, it is worth knowing that you can get a free trial version from their website (in the middle of their purchase page) that will be separate from your school’s system and you can play (and make mistakes) with.

And they have an English version of LoiloNote, too. Also, if your school lets you use an iPad, it is possible to easily change the language of the LoiloNote from Japanese to English in the general settings -> apps area of the ipad.

Also, if you get a login and password from your school, you can login to it on any normal PC through an internet browser to make and edit stuff in English.

It is amazing how quickly the students are getting the hang of it. It is one way to get the students to speak English in class, even if it isn’t a conversation.
